What is UYC?

Unionville Youth Council is a group of students in grades 7-12 who are passionate about making a positive impact in our community. We are a youth-led organization that believes in the power of volunteering and community engagement.

UYC is a place where our members can grow as leaders and citizens by truly becoming difference makers. We provide a supportive environment for students to develop confidence, leadership skills and have a voice in their community.

Our council leads and participates in charitable and community events that give our members opportunities to get involved in the community and make an impact through volunteering.

What do we do?

As an organization dedicated to serving the local community, we are actively involved in a diverse range of events and projects that address community needs and promote youth engagement. Over the years, our members have led or supported a wide variety of events, including the Old Tyme Christmas parade, the Unionville Festival, and Markham Idol. We have also had the privilege of supporting local organizations like Master's Pantry, Operation Christmas Child and Covenant House, and have organized initiatives to serve the homeless downtown among many others.

Our mission

Here, at Unionville Youth Council, it is our mission to empower youth to make a tangible and positive difference in our community. We achieve this by providing our members opportunities to lead and participate in charitable events where we coordinate initiatives and volunteer at local organizations that rely on our support. UYC also leads many community events that offer diverse experiences for youth in Markham, such as fun fairs, talent shows and seasonal Christmas events. By taking part in these projects, our members are able to develop essential leadership skills and turn their passion for making a difference into meaningful action. We believe that through our efforts, we can inspire future leaders who will carry on the mission of creating positive change.

Our history

We began in 2001 with a simple mission: to give students a voice and a platform to make a positive impact in their community. What began with just four members meeting at the Unionville Train Station has since grown into an active council of over 60 dedicated students who are a key part of youth involvement in Markham.

Over the past two decades, UYC has not only grown in size but has also benefitted the lives of countless people through our events.

Our past is defined by the projects and events we've led. For 13 years, we ran the very successful Markham Idol. We also host annual fun fairs and are always involved in local favourites like the Unionville Festival and the Old Tyme Christmas parade. We've worked for years with charities like Masters Pantry, Operation Christmas Child and Covenant House, and have led several charitable initiatives ourselves. Our list of events we are involved with grows each year as we continue to desire to make a greater impact.

Today, UYC continues to be a unique group in Markham, committed to helping student leaders make a positive difference in our community.
